Another robot! So this year is all about robots trying to get a feel for themselves, or something. Like Chappie, Avengers 2 had its own robotic character named Ultron that was on a path to self discovery, except that he was an evil jerk from the start. Design-wise he was pretty damn cool. My guess is that the direction the filmmakers took with Ultron’s look was to blend Iron Man’s sleek aesthetic with how a self aware robot would perceive itself. The end result is that you get this sort of physically similar but totally abstract humanoid which I thought was rad.
The design choices behind Ogun took a similar approach. I wanted to make a character that looked human, but you weren’t really sure if he is a man in a suit or a robot like the aliens he is fighting against. And then seeing Ultron on screen validated my decision because he looks awesome! It was actually nice seeing a huge Hollywood blockbuster going the same route and taking a more human-like design approach with its robotic creation.
As for the movie, it was good, but not like the first Avengers good. There was way too much going on and Ultron, despite being a very interesting character, just couldn’t get enough screen time to make him stand out more.Permalink

So I tried to wire up the UI myself but this wasn’t working. Let’s try one more time to find a developer. This time the search was quicker. I found Programmer #4 earlier and it turns out he had become available. Programmer #4 is web engineer that has released his own Unity plugin. He's great very straight forward and clear on what was needed. Programmer #4 looked at the game and created efficiencies within the code and did lots of sanity checks. Good news, Programmer #3’s code works. Thank you Programmer #3 and #4. The code needed to be wired together so the modules could begin talking as a system. The UI and combat are coming to life and Secret of Amma is now feeling like game.Permalink

It’s been a while, we've been too busy getting a Lot of systems finalized, and more importantly, making this game actually look like a game, and not just pretty pictures for the world to see. World construction was getting a bit too time consuming for such a small team so we opted to go with voxels, pretty pretty voxels all with the help of a very cool asset called Voxeland.
And Unity 5 finally released officially and that was cool, although it did break some things here and there, but that was to be expected!
As for Secret of Amma, it really feels more like Castlevania than Metroid, and that’s a good thing. When this was first even conceived, a looooooooooooong time ago, the idea was to make a metroidvania that was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Hopefully in the next few months you will feel the same!Permalink

This summer in particular has a lot of robots coming out and taking over the big screen, but are they cool and hip? Chappie tries to be! Was the movie successful? Not really : /
I saw District 9 and like everyone else I was pretty amazed that a movie could actually pull off making bugs something you’d want to really care about. With that in mind I was stoked to see what a movie about a sentient robot living in Africa would be like because that concept is right up my alley!
It turns out that the Chappie story was a let down. The production value was great, but freaky at the same time. I didn’t really enjoy watching Chappie move around and acting like a person. It was too surreal, especially with the South African backdrop and Die Antwoord ‘trying’ to act like good guys. The ending also made little sense. Well a lot of the movie made no sense which was a huge turn off. I would have been happy to watch 2 hours of Die Antwoord music videos than sit through Chappie and try and make sense of it. The robot looked nice though.Permalink
